Virgin Atlantic’s carry-on rules are refreshingly consistent across routes: you’re bringing (1) a main cabin bag for the overhead bin and (2) a smaller under-seat bag for essentials. The main things to get right are the airline’s published cabin-bag dimensions and the weight limit that applies to your cabin.
For a quick cross-airline comparison, you can also reference my guide to airline carry-on luggage rules.
Virgin Atlantic carry-on rules at a glance
- Cabin bag size: 56 × 36 × 23 cm (about 22″ × 14″ × 9″)
- Under-seat bag: One small bag (handbag / small rucksack) that must fit under the seat
- Economy & Premium cabin-bag weight: 10 kg (22 lb) for your cabin bag
- Upper Class cabin-bag allowance: 2 cabin bags (see weight section for the combined-weight rule)
- Liquids: Standard airport security rules apply (details below)

Virgin Atlantic carry-on size limit (cabin bag)
Virgin Atlantic’s maximum cabin bag size is:
- 56 × 36 × 23 cm
That’s the number to plan around, and it’s the measurement you should check including wheels, handles, and anything that protrudes (especially if your bag has thick corner guards or a structured front pocket).
Virgin Atlantic under-seat personal item rules
Virgin Atlantic allows one under-seat bag, typically described as a handbag or small rucksack, and it needs to fit under the seat in front of you.
If you want a simple way to pack this without overthinking it, make your under-seat bag the “things I can’t lose” bag:
- passport / documents
- medication
- chargers / battery pack
- laptop / tablet (if you’re bringing one)
- one layer (hoodie/light jacket)
Recommended Carry-On Bag for Virgin Atlantic
The easiest way to avoid carry-on drama when you’re flying internationally is to use a bag that’s designed around international size limits, not U.S. domestic bins. That’s why I recommend the Travelpro Maxlite 5 International Expandable Carry-On Spinner (19″) —it’s compact, rolls well, and tends to be a safer fit across a wide range of international airlines.
Manufacturer dimensions:
- Overall (includes wheels and carry handles): 21.75″ H × 15.75″ W × 7.75″ D
Quick fit note for Virgin Atlantic
Virgin Atlantic’s published cabin-bag size is 56 × 36 × 23 cm, and the Maxlite 5 International is roughly 55.2 × 40.0 × 19.7 cm overall. That means the height and depth are in good shape, but the overall width is wider than Virgin’s 36 cm spec.
If you want the lowest-risk “fits the sizer on paper” compliance for Virgin Atlantic specifically, use a roller that’s 36 cm wide (or less). If you still prefer the Maxlite 5 International, keep it unexpanded and avoid overstuffing the exterior so it stays as slim as possible in real-world use.
Garment Bags
A garment bag can only be used as your hand baggage in Economy or Premium if it fits the dimensions of the hand baggage allowance. If you’d like to bring one but it exceeds 23 x 36 x 56 cm, it will need to be as additional checked in baggage.
In Upper Class, your hand baggage can also include one garment bag, 20cm (8 inches) thick – again, this shouldn’t exceed 12kg. This will count towards your two bag limit.
Virgin Atlantic Carry-On Weight Limit
Virgin Atlantic’s carry-on weight rules depend on cabin:
Economy and Premium
- Weight: 10 kg (22 lb) for your cabin bag
Upper Class
Virgin Atlantic publishes a combined-weight approach:
- If you bring one cabin bag: up to 12 kg (26 lb)
- If you bring two cabin bags: up to 16 kg (35 lb) total
Practical note: even when your fare allows two cabin bags, you still want a setup you can comfortably lift and handle in a real boarding line.
Virgin Atlantic Liquid Allowance
Liquids are governed by the security rules at the airport you’re departing from, not by the airline itself. The standard approach you should pack for is:
- liquids/gels/aerosols in containers of 100 ml (3.4 oz) or less
- all containers in one clear, resealable bag (often 1 liter)
- exceptions can apply for items like medications and baby food
Virgin Atlantic also has specific guidance for duty-free liquids and connecting-airport security screening, so if you’re buying liquids airside, keep them sealed and keep your receipt.
For a plain-English walkthrough (including what counts as a liquid and the common edge cases), see my TSA liquids rule guide.
Below is a table that provides some examples of Non-solid Food and Personal Items that are considered “liquids”:
| Liquids | Food | Aerosols | Gels |
| Beverages | Jelly | Spray Paint | Hair Gel |
| Shampoo | Pudding | Deodorant Spray | Shower Gel |
| Conditioner | Yogurt | Insect Repellent | Hand Sanitizer |
| Toothpaste | Gelatin | Cooking Spray | Gel Deodorant |
| Lotion | Mashed Potatoes | Sunscreen | |
| Mouthwash | Peanut Butter | Spray Lubricant | |
| Liquid soap | Cheese Spread | Hairspray | |
| Contact Lens Solution | Maple Syrup | Shaving Cream | |
| Perfume | Hummus |

The Dominick Hotel Review: New York, NY (SoHo)
Hi. Can you please inform me if I’m allowed to take a chainsaw in my checked baggage – obviously empty of all fluids. Travelling from Adelaide to Hobart.
