How Marriott Bonvoy Points Are Earned on Paid Stays
Marriott Bonvoy points earned from paid stays typically include:
- Base points earned per eligible dollar spent on the room rate and qualifying charges
- Elite status bonus points (Silver, Gold, Platinum, Titanium, or Ambassador)
- Promotional bonus points from registered Marriott offers
- Credit card points if you pay with a Marriott co-branded credit card
Most Marriott brands award points on eligible room rates booked directly with Marriott. Taxes, resort fees, and some incidentals may not qualify.
What Are Marriott Bonvoy Points Worth?
This calculator focuses on estimating how many Marriott Bonvoy points you’ll earn from a paid stay. However, many travelers also want a quick sense of what those points may be worth once earned.
Industry estimates commonly place the average value of Marriott Bonvoy points at approximately 0.6–0.8 cents per point, though actual value can vary widely depending on the property, dates, and redemption availability. This valuation range is provided only as a reference to help interpret the output of this calculator — the primary purpose of this page is to estimate points earned, not redemption value. Our calculator assumes a value of 0.8 cents per point.
How This Calculator Works
This calculator estimates the total number of Marriott Bonvoy points you can earn on a paid stay using the following structure:
Eligible Spend × Base Earning Rate = Base Points Earned
Additional points may then be added for:
- Elite status bonuses
- Registered promotional offers
- Credit card earning (if selected)
How are Marriott Bonvoy Points Calculated?
Here is a little more detail on how the number of points you earn per stay is calculated.
Base Rate & Eligible Charges:
The first thing you need to know is that you don't earn points on the total amount of your folio (invoice). Fees, taxes, and possibly other expenses charged to your room, like a round of golf or an excursion, do not earn points (that is unless you use a Marriott Co-Branded Credit Card—more on that later).
At most Marriott properties, you'll earn 10 points per dollar spent on the base room rate, plus eligible charges.
The exception to this is if you stay at one of Marriott's extended stay properties, where you will only earn 5 points per dollar spent. Extended stay brands include:
- Apartments by Marriott Bonvoy
- Four Points Express by Sheraton
- City Express
- Element
- Homes & Villas by Marriott Bonvoy
- Protea Hotels
- Residence Inn
- TownePlace Suites
- Marriott Executive Apartments (earn 2.5 base points per dollar spent)

You will also earn points on what Marriott calls “Qualifying Room Charges.” These include room service, in-room entertainment, and internet charges. Typically, they also include food and beverage purchased on the property and charged to your room.
Charges that will not earn Bonvoy points
- Taxes
- Service Charges
- Gratuities
- Food and beverages when the restaurant is are not managed or operated by the hotel you are staying at.
- Third-Party Services (e.g., parking, business center, Water-Sport rentals, etc.)
- Certain Room Rates (Non-Qualifying Room Rates)
- Group/Convention Rates settled through a Master Bill
- Airline Crew Room charges
- Tours or Prepackaged Deals booked through Travel Agents
- Wholesale Rates
- Third-party bookings (e.g., Priceline, Orbitz, Expedia, etc.)
- The Cash portion of a Cash + Points Rate
Elite Status
If you have elite status with Marriott Bonvoy, you'll earn a bonus on your base points, as follows:
- Silver – 10% Bonus
- Gold – 25% Bonus
- Platinum – 50% Bonus
- Titanium – 75% Bonus
- Ambassador – 75% Bonus
Go to Marriott Bonvoy's member benefits page for more information about the other benefits you will receive as a member.
Paying with a Marriott Co-Branded Credit Card
Here is where the total cost of your stay comes into play. If you use a Marriott Co-Branded credit card to pay your bill, you earn Marriott Bonvoy points for the entire bill, not just the base room rate.
So, while you don’t earn base Marriott Bonvoy points for taxes, fees, and anything else you charge to your room, you will earn points for those items when you pay with a Marriott credit card.
If I am staying at a Marriott and plan to pay with my credit card, I always make sure to charge everything I can to my room so I can earn extra bonus points for those charges.
When This Marriott Points Calculator Is Most Accurate
This calculator is most accurate when:
- You enter the eligible room rate before taxes and unrelated fees
- You include only promotions you are registered for
- You account for brand-specific earning differences
Some Marriott brands earn fewer base points per dollar, and certain special or third-party bookings may earn reduced or no points. Use this calculator as a planning and comparison tool rather than an exact accounting statement.
Marriott Promotions
Have you registered for the latest Marriott Bonvoy Promotion?
This is another way to add even more points to your stay. If you aren’t familiar with them, Marriott offers promotions 2-4 times yearly, usually every quarter.
These promotions are different each time and can help you turbocharge your point earning and ability to earn elite status.
