Which ticket price to use
American generally awards miles based on the ticket price (typically base fare plus mandatory carrier-imposed fees), but not on government-imposed taxes and fees.
Practical tip: in your email receipt or trip receipt, look for the fare amount (and any carrier-imposed fees). Avoid using the “Total” if it includes government taxes/fees.
How American calculates AAdvantage miles on paid flights
For most eligible American-marketed paid tickets, miles are calculated from your eligible dollars (ticket price excluding government taxes/fees) multiplied by your base earning rate and status bonus.
AAdvantage Status bonuses
- AAdvantage member (no status): 5 miles per $1 (eligible dollars)
- Gold: 40% bonus (usually 7 miles per $1 total)
- Platinum: 60% bonus (usually 8 miles per $1 total)
- Platinum Pro: 80% bonus (usually 9 miles per $1 total)
- Executive Platinum: 120% bonus (usually 11 miles per $1 total)
Simple formula
Miles earned ≈ Eligible ticket price × Miles-per-dollar (based on status)
Example
If your eligible ticket price is $420 and you’re Platinum:
- $420 x 8 miles per $1 = 3,360 AAdvantage miles
Important note: when your actual earning may differ
American’s earning rules can depend on where you booked the ticket (direct, eligible partners, preferred agencies, corporate/AAdvantage Business). If your booking channel is not eligible, your actual earning can be lower than the estimate (including zero).
Miles can also differ on partner-marketed flights or special/exception fares (such as packages or opaque fares), where earnings may follow a chart based on booking class and distance rather than ticket price.

What are American Airlines miles worth?
As a planning estimate, we typically value American Airlines AAdvantage miles at ~1.7 cents each. That’s a reasonable average if you redeem for flights strategically, but your real value can be higher or lower depending on route, cabin, and cash fare.
If you want to know whether a specific redemption is a good deal (cash price vs miles required), use our Points Value (CPP) Calculator.

No. Not if the ticket was purchased on/after December 17, 2025. Before that date, they did.
Flights booked fully with miles generally do not earn additional AAdvantage miles.
It depends. Booking channel eligibility can affect whether you earn miles/Loyalty Points. If you want the most predictable outcome, booking direct is typically the simplest.
Not exactly. You often earn both on eligible activity, but Loyalty Points are used for elite status qualification, while AAdvantage miles are used for redemption. (For the full breakdown, see our guide to how points and miles work.)
The two most common causes are:
1. You used the total price, including taxes/fees, instead of the eligible dollars.
2. The fare is an exception/special fare or the flight is marketed by a partner, and earnings are based on a chart rather than ticket price.
