United MileagePlus Credit Cards
The quickest way to earn United Frequent Flyer Miles, especially if you are not a road warrior, is through credit card spending and sign up bonuses. With United, you can earn miles through a variety of credit cards – either with a co-branded United MileagePlus card or with one that offers transfer options to United such as Chase Ultimate Rewards or Marriott. Here are the best credit cards for earning United Frequent Flyer Miles.
United Co-Branded Credit Cards
United Airlines Co-Branded Credit Cards are available as both a personal and business cards through Chase and allow you to earn United MileagePlus Miles on every purchase you make.
Marriott Credit Cards that transfer to United MileagePlus
Starwood Preferred Guest (“SPG”) Points can be transferred to United Miles – However, the transfer ratio is not as strong as it is with other airlines. Most airlines transfer at a ratio of 1 SPG point to 1 Frequent Flyer Mile, but the SPG transfer rate with United is 2 SPG points for 1 United Mile. In this case you will get 15,000 MileagePlus miles for every 20,000 Starpoints with the SPG 5,000 mile bonus feature.
However, with the Marriott Starwood merger, there are some other options. You are actually better off transferring you SPG points to Marriott, then transferring Marriott points to United Miles. Here are the Marriott and SPG cards that can help you earn more United Miles:
- Starwood Preferred Guest American Express
- Starwood Preferred Guest BUSINESS American Express
- Marriott Rewards Premier Credit Card
- Marriott Rewards Premier BUSINESS Card
- Ritz Carlton Rewards Visa
Chase Credit Cards that transfer to United MileagePlus
Transfer points to United through Chase. Chase Ultimate Rewards Points can also be transferred to United at a rate of 1:1. The following cards earn Chase Ultimate Rewards Points:
- Chase Sapphire Preferred Credit Card
- Chase Sapphire Reserve Card
- Chase Freedom Unlimited Credit Card
- Chase Freedom Credit Card
- Chase Ink Plus Business Credit Card

United Airlines Basic Economy
To compete with the low price air carriers, United recently introduced Basic Economy fares. Basic Economy fares provide most of the same inflight services and amenities that are available with standard Economy — such as food and beverages, United Wi-FiSM and inflight entertainment — but with some important restrictions that you’ll want to be sure to review carefully before booking:
- Your seat will be automatically assigned prior to boarding, and you won’t be able to change your seat once it’s been assigned
- If you are traveling in a group, including families, will not be able to sit together.
- You’re not allowed a full-sized carry-on bag unless you’re a MileagePlus Premier member or companion traveling on the same reservation. Everyone else who brings a full-sized carry-on bag to the gate will be required to check their bag and pay the applicable checked bag fee plus a $25 gate handling charge.
- Ticket changes are not allowed with Basic Economy, including advance and same-day changes.
- You will be in the last boarding group unless you’re a MileagePlus Premier member or companion traveling on the same reservation
United Economy Class
United’s economy class seating is fairly standard for domestic carriers. Wifi and in flight entertainment are available as well as complimentary beverages (non-alchoholic) and snacks.
United Economy Plus
Economy Plus seats have up to five inches of extra legroom and are located near the front of the United Economy cabin. Economy Plus seating is available on all United flights and most United Express flights. Customers who have selected Basic Economy will not, however, be able to purchase Economy Plus seating.
United First/Business Class
United recently redesigned their domestic business class seat with two tone leather, a six way adjustable headrest and storage spaces for your laptop and water bottle. There is also an A/C plug to stay fully charged, wifi and United private screening in-flight entertainment. Domestic first and business class are essentially the same thing.
United Polaris Business Class
United’s highest class of service is called Polaris Business Class. This new class of service is focused on giving international business travelers a much better class of service. The food and wine are a significant upgrade as well as a redesigned lie flat seat with luxury bedding. The Polaris class of service is currently offered on United’s Boeing 777 fleet of aircraft.
