How IHG Rewards Points Are Earned on Paid Stays

IHG Rewards points earned from paid stays typically consist of:

• Base points earned per eligible dollar spent on the room rate and qualifying charges
• Elite status bonus points (if applicable)
• Promotional bonus points from registered offers
• Credit card points if you pay with an eligible IHG co-branded card

Most direct IHG bookings earn points on the eligible room rate, while taxes, resort fees, and some incidentals may not qualify.

How This Calculator Works

This calculator estimates the total number of IHG Rewards points you can earn on a paid stay using the following general structure:

Eligible Spend × Base Earning Rate = Base Points Earned

Additional points may then be added for:

• Elite status bonuses
• Registered promotional offers
• Credit card earning (if selected)

Base Rate & Eligible Charges:

The first thing you need to know is that you don't earn points on the total amount of your folio (invoice). Things like fees, taxes and possibly other charges you bill to your room, like a round of golf or an excursion, do not earn points (That is, unless you use an IHG Credit Card… more on that later).

At most IHG properties, you'll earn 10 points per dollar spent on the base room rate. The one exception to this is if you stay at either a Staybridge Suites or Candlewood Suites property. They only earn 5 points per dollar spent.

Elite Status:

If you have elite status with IHG you will earn a points bonus ranging from 20% for Silver status to 100% for Diamond status.

As a side note, IHG offers a very easy way to earn Platinum status. If you have the IHG Premier Personal or Business credit card, you will be given automatic Platinum status as a perk with the card.

How Much Are IHG Points Worth?

While this calculator focuses on estimating how many IHG Rewards points you’ll earn, many travelers also want a quick sense of what those points might be worth when redeemed.

Industry estimates typically place the value of IHG points at 0.5–0.7 cents per point on average, though actual value varies significantly by property, date, and reward availability. This value range is provided only as a reference to help interpret the output of this calculator — the primary purpose of this page is to estimate points earned, not redemption value. We assume a value of 0.6 for our calculator.

Paying with an IHG Co-Branded Credit Card

Here is where the total cost of your stay comes into play. If you use an IHG Co-Branded credit card to pay your bill, you earn Bonus IHG One Rewards Points for the entire cost of your bill, not just the base room rate.

So while you don't earn base IHG points for things like taxes, fees and anything else you charge to your room, you will earn points for those items when you pay with an IHG credit card.

If I am staying at an IHG property and plan to pay with my credit card, I always make sure to charge everything I can to my room, so I can get the extra bonus points for those charges.
