Hertz CDP codes can be a great way to save money on a rental car — but they can also backfire if you don’t understand how they’re supposed to be used. While many travelers enter a CDP code and never hear a word about it, others find out at the counter that their discount no longer applies.

A Hertz CDP code is a Corporate Discount Program number that can change your rental rate when you book on Hertz. You enter it during booking (or save it in your Hertz profile).
Before you rely on it:

  • Use a CDP only if you’re actually eligible through an employer, membership, or credit card benefit.
  • Hertz may ask for proof (company ID, membership card, or the credit card tied to the CDP) and remove the discount if you can’t verify it.
  • If you want price certainty, a public/member rate is often safer than chasing the biggest CDP discount.

This guide walks through how Hertz CDP codes actually work in real life, who they’re meant for, when verification happens, and when you’re often better off using a different discount altogether.

What’s a Hertz CDP Code?

A Hertz CDP code — short for Corporate Discount Program — is a negotiated rate tied to a specific company, organization, credit card, or insurance provider. When you add a CDP code during booking, Hertz applies pricing that’s associated with that agreement.

On paper, it sounds simple. In practice, enforcement is inconsistent.

Some rentals go through with no questions asked. Others are reviewed at the counter, especially at airport locations. That uncertainty is what makes CDP codes confusing — and why it’s important to understand the risk before relying on one.

Here is a description of the different Hertz offer codes:

1. Hertz CDP Codes – Corporate Discount Program (Corporate Codes):

The Hertz CDP code is a contract that has been established in cooperation with a company or organization (a Corporate Discount Code) to provide discounts beyond what is provided to the public.  Examples of CDP codes include corporate rate plans, credit cards, and travel club discount programs.  A CDP Number consists of numerical values and is between 1 and 10 digits long.

This number can also be used in conjunction with a PC (Promotion Code), RQ (Rate Code), or CV (Convention Number), if the special offer or promotion requires additional information, and is included in the reservation.

2. Hertz PC Codes – Promotion Code:

The PC code is a six-digit number that is associated with a special offer or promotion.

This number can also be used in conjunction with a CDP (Discount Program) or RQ (Rate Code) if the special offer or promotion requires additional information to be included in the reservation.

3. Hertz RQ Codes – Rate Code:

The RQ code is a four to six-digit code that is used to trigger discounts off of standard leisure rates.

This number is often displayed in a special offer with the text “I was told to ask for”. An RQ can also be used in conjunction with a CDP (Discount Program) or PC (Promotion Code) if the special offer or promotion requires additional information to be included in the reservation.

4. Hertz CV Codes – Convention Number

The CV code is a unique meeting number for a group that will generate pre-negotiated, discounted meeting rates and benefits. Insert the code in the CV field when making a reservation to receive pre-negotiated meeting rates. A CV number can only be used in conjunction with a CDP (Discount Program) or RQ (Rate Code) if the negotiated meeting rate allows additional information to be included in the reservation.

5. Hertz IT Codes – Voucher Code

These codes are less common and are tied to your reward documentation.  You don’t need to pay much attention to this code type.

Who Hertz CDP Codes Are Meant For

Hertz CDP codes are typically intended for:

  • Employees of companies with negotiated rental contracts
  • Members of professional or membership organizations
  • Credit card holders whose cards include a Hertz CDP benefit
  • Insurance replacement rentals set up through an insurer

If you clearly fall into one of these groups, using a CDP code is usually low risk and works as expected.

When Using a Hertz CDP Code Gets Risky

Issues tend to come up when CDP codes are used outside their intended purpose. From experience, higher-risk situations include:

  • Leisure rentals using employer-only corporate CDPs
  • International rentals, especially outside the U.S.
  • Prepaid (“Pay Now”) reservations
  • One-way rentals or specialty vehicles
  • Busy travel periods when rates are changing quickly

In these cases, you’re more likely to see verification — or a rate change — at pickup.

Will Hertz Ask for Proof? What Actually Happens at the Counter

This is the question most people are really trying to answer.

Hertz can ask for proof that you qualify for the CDP you used. That might include:

  • A company ID
  • A membership card
  • The credit card associated with the CDP

Sometimes they don’t ask for anything. Other times, they do.

If you can’t verify eligibility, Hertz typically removes the CDP and reprices the rental at the standard rate. Cancellations are rare, but price increases at the counter are not, particularly at airports.

It’s also worth noting that Hertz Gold Plus Rewards status doesn’t override CDP eligibility. Elite status helps with speed and upgrades, not contract enforcement.

Hertz Corporate Codes

Hertz Corporate Codes are heavily discounted rates negotiated between a company and Hertz. These are a great way to save on car rentals, but you need to be very careful when using them.

Specifically, you need to make sure you’re eligible to use a corporate code before applying it to your next car rental.  There are a lot of risks associated with using a code that you don’t qualify for.  To begin with, you’ll most likely be asked for identification to prove you’re associated with the company whose code you’re using. If you can’t prove you are associated with that organization, there’s a good chance your rental will be denied.

Even more important, if you get into a car accident, you could have a big issue with your insurance claim if the rental is tied to a corporate account and their business insurance. Often the claim will go back to the company with the negotiated rate, not to you. This could mean huge delays in getting reimbursement and possibly a claim denial.

If you work for a major corporation, especially one that has a lot of travelers (IBM, Deloitte, Accenture, etc..), make sure you contact your Human Resources or Corporate Travel Department as the savings can be huge when using these corporate discount codes. Please ensure you are associated with the company and qualified to use them.

Hertz explicitly states that identification may be required to verify CDP eligibility(including for Gold/Platinum members the first time using a particular CDP).

If you have a code from your company, go to the Hertz Booking Page to apply the corporate discount code that applies to you.  Detailed instructions for entering the code are below.

When You Should Skip Using a Hertz Corporate Code

You may want to avoid CDP codes entirely if:

  • You’re renting internationally
  • You’re booking a prepaid rate
  • You’re not confident you qualify for the CDP
  • You prefer price certainty over chasing the biggest discount

In those situations, a public or member rate is often the safer and less stressful choice.

5 Other Ways to Save With Hertz Car Rental

Car Rental Discount Codes are not the only way to save when you rent a car.  Here are a couple of other tips to consider when renting your next car.

1. Join the Loyalty Club

This is a “no brainer”.  Joining the Hertz loyalty program is free and only takes a couple of minutes to sign up.  Once you are a member, you can get great perks, free rental days, and free upgrades.

2. Pay with a Premium Credit Card

Premier credit cards, like the Chase Sapphire Preferred or Reserve card, have rental car insurance benefits included which will allow you to bypass the added insurance fees the car companies will try to get you to purchase at the rental counter.

Make sure your credit card offers “primary” rental car insurance coverage.  My Sapphire Preferred Card saved me when I had an accident in Italy.

3. Rent Off Airport

I’m not a huge fan of this option, since it can be quite an inconvenience.  However, you can save quite a bit by renting outside of the airport and avoiding all of the added fees that come with renting at the airport.

4. Don’t prepay for Gas

It’s easy to get sucked into thinking that the lower-priced prepaid gas is a good deal.  It isn’t.   When you prepay for gas you are paying for a full tank.  The odds of you using every last bit of gas before you return are very low.   Fill the tank up several miles outside the airport and you will be better off.

5. Consider booking through an airline portal

Many major airlines have partnerships with rental car companies, offering drivers discounts, the ability to earn miles, and more when you book the car rental through their portal.

You can also book a vacation package through your airline.  Any time you can package your flight with a car rental and/or hotel stay, there is an opportunity for additional savings.
