What you need to enter for the most accurate result
Spirit points are earned on what you pay Spirit for the flight and eligible add-ons, but not on the government taxes and fees.
For best results, separate your purchase into two buckets:
1) Fare (airfare)
Enter the fare amount you paid for the ticket (excluding government taxes/fees).
Practical tip: In your email receipt or trip receipt, look for the airfare/fare line item and avoid using the “Total” if it includes taxes and government fees.
2) Add-ons (Spirit “À La Smarte” options)
Enter what you paid Spirit for add-ons like:
- seats
- bags
- other optional purchase items tied to the reservation
If you didn’t buy any add-ons, enter zero.
How Spirit calculates Free Spirit points on paid flights
Spirit’s earning model is straightforward once you split the purchase into fare and add-ons. In general:
- Fare earns points at one rate
- Add-ons earn points at a higher rate
- Elite status increases both rates
Base earning rates (no status)
- 6 points per $1 on fare
- 12 points per $1 on add-ons
Elite earning rates (Silver / Gold)
- Silver: 8 points per $1 on fare, 16 points per $1 on add-ons
- Gold: 10 points per $1 on fare, 20 points per $1 on add-ons
Simple formula (what your calculator should do)
Total points ≈ (Fare × Fare rate) + (Add-ons × Add-on rate)
Example (easy test case)
Assume:
- Fare (eligible): $120
- Add-ons (eligible): $60
- Status: No status
Calculation:
- Fare points: 120 × 6 = 720
- Add-on points: 60 × 12 = 720
- Total points: 1,440
Important note: when your actual earning may differ
This calculator is designed for typical Spirit bookings and is most accurate when you:
- Enter fare and add-ons separately, and
- Exclude government taxes/fees from both fields.
Your posted results can differ if your receipt bundles items in a way that makes it hard to separate fare vs add-ons, or if you enter the total amount including taxes/fees.
What are Spirit points worth?
Spirit points can deliver solid value when fares are high (or when you find a good award), but the value can also swing based on timing, route, and fees that may apply to some award bookings.
For a planning estimate, it’s reasonable to start around ~1.0 cent per point and then validate the exact redemption using our Points Value (CPP) Calculator.
A simple workflow we recommend
- Use this Spirit points calculator to estimate what you’ll earn on a paid reservation.
- If you’re considering an award booking, use our Points Value (CPP) Calculator to compare the real cents-per-point value.
- Decide based on value, flexibility, and your future travel plans.
