Powerscourt Hotel Review: Wicklow Ireland

We stayed at the Powerscourt Hotel for three nights for a friend’s wedding. The wedding was beautiful, and the whole trip was great. The hotel was part of that, but not all of it. When you’re in Ireland with friends for a wedding, a lot of things have to go right, and in this case, they all did.

Powerscourt sits on a 1,000-acre estate in County Wicklow, about 30 minutes south of Dublin. The Powerscourt House and Gardens are next door, and the Sugar Loaf Mountain is in the background. It opened as a Ritz-Carlton and is now part of the Autograph Collection. Here’s my review of our 3 night stay.

Location

The hotel sits on the Powerscourt Estate outside Enniskerry, a small village in County Wicklow. It’s about 30 minutes south of Dublin city centre and roughly 35 to 40 minutes from Dublin Airport, so it’s easy to get to but doesn’t feel close to anything. What you get instead are the Wicklow Mountains, the Sugar Loaf, and 1,000 acres of estate.

Being next to Powerscourt House and Gardens is the real advantage. The gardens are one of the best-known in Ireland, and they’re right there. You’re also close to Glendalough and the rest of the Wicklow Mountains National Park if you want to get out and see more of the area.

Lobby

The first thing we saw pulling up was a dark green Morgan roadster parked at the entrance, which the bride and groom drove to the ceremony after the wedding. That set the tone. The hotel entrance is a covered forecourt with a revolving door and clipped topiary on either side, and it’s the kind of arrival that tells you the place takes itself seriously.

The lobby is what you’d expect from a hotel that opened as a Ritz-Carlton — large, formal, and built to make an impression. The Sugar Loaf Lounge sits off it and does afternoon tea, which is a tradition here.

Rooms and Suites

There are 198 rooms and suites here, and 98 of those are suites — that’s an unusually high ratio, and it tells you what kind of property this is. The standard features run across all of them: floor-to-ceiling windows, marble bathrooms with double vanities and a separate tub and shower, a minibar, a work desk, and featherbedding. Suites add a separate living area, and the Mountain View Suites with balconies are the ones people talk about. Views are either the gardens or the Sugar Loaf.

We were in a Deluxe Guest Room. The room was large, with floor-to-ceiling windows looking out over the grounds. The bathroom was the standout — marble, with double vanities, a separate soaking tub, and a rain shower. It’s a proper full-size bathroom, not the compressed version you get at a lot of hotels in Europe.

Restaurants and Bars

There are four dining options at the hotel, which is more than most properties this size manage. Sika is the main restaurant — contemporary Irish cooking with local sourcing, and floor-to-ceiling glass looking out at the Sugar Loaf. It does a tasting menu and it’s the one that books up, so reserve ahead.

The Sally Gap Bar and Brasserie is the more casual room. Light-filled, open to adults and children, with a wine and cocktail list and whiskey from the Powerscourt Distillery next door. Reviewers consistently mention the atmosphere here, and it’s where a lot of people end up for a drink before dinner at Sika.

McGills is a traditional Irish pub with straightforward pub food, and the Sugar Loaf Lounge does traditional afternoon tea plus lighter fare through the day. Afternoon tea in the Sugar Loaf Lounge is a bit of an institution here, with the mountain in full view. Room service rounds it out.

Between the wedding and everything around it, we never had lunch or dinner at the hotel. So I can’t tell you anything firsthand about that. What we did have was breakfast every morning at Sika, and it was fantastic.

Amenities

The spa is the main indoor draw. It runs across two floors with 20 treatment rooms, a Serenity Room looking out at the Sugar Loaf, a hydrotherapy pool, a hammam suite, steam room, sauna, and heated loungers. The centerpiece is a 20-meter indoor pool lit by Swarovski crystals, which sounds like a gimmick and mostly isn’t — it’s a genuinely nice room to swim in. There’s also a glass-fronted Technogym fitness studio.

Golf is a real part of the property, but our flight was delayed, and we missed the tee time we had set up with the wedding party. The Powerscourt Golf Club has two championship 18-hole courses, the East and the West, and they’re a short walk from the hotel. Worth knowing that the golf club is a separate operation from the hotel, so tee times and rates are handled through the club rather than the front desk.

Powerscourt House and Gardens sit next door, stretching over 47 acres, with terraced lawns, formal planting, and paths that will fill an afternoon. They’re among the best-known gardens in Ireland and the main reason people come to this part of Wicklow. The estate also has river walk paths and cycling trails, and the hotel makes bicycles available with a map of the grounds.

This is where the wedding reception was held. It is one of the most beautiful wedding settings I have ever seen!!

Final Thoughts

Powerscourt was the right place for this trip. The wedding was beautiful, we had a great time, and the hotel held up its end of it. The room was large and the marble bathroom was the best I’ve had in a while. Breakfast was fantastic every morning. The grounds and the gardens next door are the kind of setting that makes a weekend feel like more than a weekend.

I’d recommend staying here, with one caveat: we were there for a wedding, so we never ate dinner at the hotel, never used the spa, and never played the golf. What I can vouch for is the property itself, the room, and the mornings. If you’re going to Ireland and want a base outside Dublin that still puts you 30 minutes from the city, this is a strong choice. Go with more time than we had.
