If you are planning a trip to the Greek Islands, there is a good chance you will be flying Aegean Airlines to get there.
Here are the carry-on rules you need to be aware of regarding carry-on size, weight, fees, liquids, etc. It’s important to know these in advance so you don’t run into any issues at the airport.
Aegean Airlines (and Olympic Air) Carry On Size & Weight Limits
The carry on rules are different depending on the fare class of your ticket.
Economy Class / Light Fare:
You are allowed to bring one (1) carry-on items with you:
This includes one carry-on bag up to 8kg (17.5 lbs) OR one personal item onboard, at no charge.
The personal item should fit under the seat in front of you, and the carry-on bag must be stowed in the overhead bin.
Flex & ComfortFlex Fare:
Υou are allowed to bring two (2) carry-on items with you:
1 carry-on bag up to 8kg (17.5 lbs) that can be stored in the overhead bin AND 1 personal item that must fit under the seat in front of you.
Business Class Fare:
Υou are allowed to bring two (2) carry-on items with you, with a little extra weight:
1 carry-on baggage up to 13kg (28 lbs.) that can be stored in the overhead bin AND 1 personal item that must fit under the seat in front of you.
Is Aegean Strict about the carry on requirements?
Aegean is very strict about the number of carry-on bags you bring on board. They will ask you how many you have at the check in counter and will tag each carry on you bring with you. If you exceed the allowed limit for your fare class, you will have to pay a fee.
In my experience, they do not check the weight of your bags, just the number of them you are bringing with you.
There are two cases when you will not be able to bring your carry on with you on board the plane:
- If your carry on bag exceeds the size and weight limits, it have to be checked-in to your final destination and checked baggage charges will apply. In this case, you will be given a baggage claim receipt and you can collect your bag at the baggage claim carousel at your destination airport.
- If your cabin baggage is within the allowable limits but there is not sufficient space in the cabin, you will be asked to check it, at no additional charge to you, in the hold. This procedure takes place at the time of boarding the aircraft. You will then be given a baggage claim receipt, you will not be charged and you can collect your bag at the baggage claim carousel at your destination airport.
Aegean Airlines Carry-On Baggage Size Limit
Aegean Airlines size requirements for a carry-on are:
- Dimensions for carry-on baggage: max. 56 x 45 x 25 cm (22 x 18 x 10 in)
If you aren’t sure what size your carry-on is, Aegean provides “size check templates” located at their ticketing counters and some departure gates. But if you wait until you get to either of these locations and have an issue, it’s too late.
If the bag is too big or too heavy, you may to have to pay a fee, so it’s always better to know your bag size and the limitations in advance.
Recommended Carry-On Bag for Aegean
If you are looking for an international-sized carry-on bag, the Travelpro 20-inch Global Expandable Spinner Carry-on is definitely one to consider. It’s durable, reasonably priced, and holds enough for shorter trips (3-5 days). Plus the spinner wheels make it very easy to get through the airport quickly and effortlessly.
Aegean Airlines Carry-On Weight Limits
Aegean requires your carry-on bag to weigh less than 8 kg (17.5 lbs.). However, they typically don’t weigh your carry-on items prior to boarding, so you’re generally not going to have a problem if it’s too heavy.
The weight issue applies to check baggage more than carry-on bags since they weigh your checked bags when you check in for your flight. We had one checked bag that was 2 lbs over the limit and had to pay an extra fee for the added weight. You can check the fee table here.
If you know in advance that your checked bag will be too heavy, you can add extra baggage or carry overweight baggage in one of the following ways:
- When making an online booking via AEGEAN’s or Olympic Air’s official digital channels.
- Through My Booking, after ticket purchase and up to 2 hours before scheduled departure.
- Through Aegean’s Call Center. If you wish to pre-purchase baggage through the Call Center after your ticket has been issued, a service fee of 8 EUR per passenger will apply. You can pre-purchase baggage up to 2 hours before departure.
