If you’re flying Aegean (especially on island routes), the main thing to know is that your carry-on rules can depend on two variables: (1) your fare type, and (2) whether you’re on an Aegean Airbus flight or a smaller turboprop. I’ll keep this page focused on the three things most people search for: carry-on size, carry-on weight, and liquids—with a few practical tips along the way.

For broader context, you can also reference my complete guide to airline carry-on luggage rules.

Aegean carry-on rules at a glance

Before you start packing, here’s the quick version so you can sanity-check your bag in 30 seconds:

  • Carry-on size limit (Aegean Airbus fleet): 56 × 45 × 25 cm (about 22.0″ × 17.7″ × 9.8″)
  • Carry-on size limit (turboprop flights): 55 × 40 × 23 cm (about 21.7″ × 15.7″ × 9.1″)
  • Economy “Light” style fares: typically either 1 personal item or 1 carry-on (not both)
  • Flex/Family/ComfortFlex-type fares: typically 1 personal item plus 1 carry-on
  • Carry-on weight: commonly up to 8 kg (17.6 lb) in Economy; Business may allow more on some Aegean-operated flights
Aegean Airline Carry-On Size Limits

Aegean carry-on size limit

Aegean publishes different maximum cabin-bag dimensions depending on the aircraft type:

Aegean Airbus flights (A319/A320/A321)

  • 56 × 45 × 25 cm (22.0″ × 17.7″ × 9.8″)

Turboprop flights

  • 55 × 40 × 23 cm (21.7″ × 15.7″ × 9.1″)

If you’re unsure which aircraft you’re on, I recommend planning around the turboprop size for island hops—because that’s where standard “international” rollers can get tight.

Aegean carry-on weight limit

This is the part people get tripped up on, because the weight limit is just as real as the sizer.

  • Economy carry-on weight: plan for up to 8 kg (17.6 lb) for your overhead-bin carry-on.
  • Business Class: some Aegean materials describe a higher cabin baggage weight allowance; however, smaller aircraft can still force tighter practical limits.

My practical advice: pack as if you need to pass an 8 kg check, and treat anything above that as a bonus (not a guarantee)—especially on busy flights.

Personal item rules (under-seat bag)

Aegean generally describes a personal item as something like a handbag, slim laptop bag, or a small-to-medium backpack, and it needs to fit under the seat in front of you.

Because Aegean doesn’t always publish a single universal personal-item dimension the way some airlines do, your safest play is simple:

  • keep it compact,
  • avoid rigid frames, and
  • make sure it slides under the seat without forcing it.

Is Aegean Strict about the carry-on requirements?

Aegean is very strict about the number of carry-on bags you bring on board. They will ask you how many you have at the check in counter and will tag each carry on you bring with you. If you exceed the allowed limit for your fare class, you will have to pay a fee.

In my experience, they do not check the weight of your bags, just the number of them you are bringing with you.

There are two cases when you will not be able to bring your carry on with you on board the plane:

  1. If your carry on bag exceeds the size and weight limits, it have to be checked-in to your final destination and checked baggage charges will apply. In this case, you will be given a baggage claim receipt and you can collect your bag at the baggage claim carousel at your destination airport.
  2. If your cabin baggage is within the allowable limits but there is not sufficient space in the cabin, you will be asked to check it, at no additional charge to you, in the hold. This procedure takes place at the time of boarding the aircraft. You will then be given a baggage claim receipt, you will not be charged and you can collect your bag at the baggage claim carousel at your destination airport.

Which Aegean fares include a carry-on?

This is where fare rules matter:

If you booked a “Light” type fare

You may be limited to one item total—either:

  • one personal item, or
  • one carry-on (overhead bin)

If you show up with both, that’s when surprises (and fees) can happen at the gate.

If you booked Flex/Family/ComfortFlex (or similar)

You’ll typically get:

  • one personal item (under the seat), and
  • one carry-on (overhead bin)

If your fare name is different (Aegean tweaks labels over time), the concept is the same: basic fares are stricter; flexible fares bundle more.

Recommended Carry-On Bag for Aegean

If you want a wheeled carry-on that’s built for international sizing (without playing the “will they let this slide?” game), the Travelpro Maxlite 5 International Expandable Carry-On Spinner (19″) is the best fit.

Here’s why it works well for Aegean specifically:

  • Bag overall dimensions: 21.75″ × 15.75″ × 7.75″
  • That lines up cleanly with Aegean’s Airbus allowance (56 × 45 × 25 cm), and it’s also a strong match on the tighter routes where you may be dealing with smaller overhead bins.

Two important tips if you’re trying to keep things stress-free:

If you’re on a turboprop flight, space can be tighter. Even compliant bags may be gate-checked for free if the cabin fills up—so keep essentials (meds, chargers, documents) in your personal item.

Do not expand it when you’re flying carry-on only. Expansion is how “fits on paper” becomes “doesn’t fit in real life.”

Aegean liquids policy for carry-ons

For liquids in your cabin bags, plan for the standard airport-security rule:

  • liquids/gels in containers of 100 ml (3.4 oz) or less
  • placed inside one clear, resealable 1-liter bag
  • one bag per passenger
  • larger liquids should be bought after security (or be duty-free sealed, depending on your airport’s process)

If you want the step-by-step version (including what counts as a liquid and how to pack toiletries so they don’t get pulled), use my guide to the TSA liquids rule. Even when you’re not flying out of the U.S., the packing approach is the same—and it keeps security screening painless.

Tips to avoid gate issues on Aegean

  • If you’re on a Light/basic fare, decide in advance: carry-on roller or personal item—not both.
  • If your route includes a turboprop, pack like overhead space will be limited.
  • Keep anything fragile/valuable out of checked bags (and ideally in your personal item).
  • If you’re close on weight, move heavy items (chargers, liquids, shoes) into your under-seat bag.
