How are Choice Points Calculated?

Here is the background on how the number of points you earn per stay is calculated.

Base Rate & Eligible Charges:

With Choice Hotels, you will not earn points on the total room cost, just the base room rate. Things like fees, taxes and possibly other charges you bill to your room, do not earn points (That is, unless you use a Choice Privileges Credit Card… more on that later).

You will earn 10 points per $1 spent on qualifying stays, excluding taxes and other fees, with the following exceptions:

At MainStay Suites and Suburban Extended Stay Hotel locations, the number of points you earn per night varies based on the length of your visit:
- 1-6 nights: 10 points per $1
- 7-30 nights: 5 points per $1
- 31 nights or more: Less than 5 points per $1 (varies by hotel)
WoodSpring Suites properties are not currently participating, so you will not earn any points when you stay a WoodSpring Suites.

Elite Bonus

If you have elite status with Choice you will earn a points bonus ranging from 10% for Gold status to 50% for Diamond status.

Paying with an Choice Hotels Co-Branded Credit Card

Here is where the total cost of your stay comes into play. If you use a Choice Co-Branded credit card to pay your bill, you earn Bonus Choice Privileges Points for the entire cost of your bill, not just the base room rate.

So while you don't earn base points for things like taxes, fees and anything else you charge to your room, you will earn points for those items when you pay with a Choice credit card.

This is another way to add even more points to your stay. In case you aren't familiar with them, Choice offers promotions 2-4 times every year.

These promotions are different each time and can help you fast track your point earning and ability to earn elite status.

Pro Tip

Always sign up for every hotel program loyalty promotion when it comes out. You must register to qualify and there is no cost to register. Don't miss out on the extra points because you forgot to register!
